Anime Travel 35 - Nagi no Asukara: A Lull in the Sea in Real Life

Kiryu Ship Manufacturing Company in Kii-Nagashima, Mie Prefecture

I must admit, this by far should be the most challenging spot to visit among all other places in Japan, due to the remoteness (even harder than those of Takagi-san's spot in Shōdoshima). "A Lull in the Sea" (JP: 凪の明日から, Nagi no Asu Kara), a complex teen romance masterpiece between the relationship of people living under from Shioshishio (汐鹿生) and the people living at the land from Oshiōshi (鷲大師). This anime was produced by our favorite studio PA Works. It was based around the eastern coast of Kii Peninsula which covers parts of Mie Prefecture (Wakayama Prefecture is located at the western coast).

Seemingly the local tourist center of Kumano City (JP: 熊野市観光案内処) embraced this anime as part of their tourist attraction. They created an exhibition for the anime, and we can also found local buses with NagiAsu's wrapping which was very cool. I visited this place on February 14-15th 2025 (around valentine).

Note that it took me two days to explore due to how remote this place is (much preferable if you can drive). As an additional note, this is the first time I bring my wife for my trips which means twice the fun haha.

They used Miuna and Sayu's voice for the in-bus announcement was so cool.

1. Kiryu Shipyard

The first spot I visited was a ship manufacturing dock owned by a company called Kiryu. This is located in Kii-Nagashima, which the furthest among other places, so please beware. I didn't enter the shipyard, but seemingly you can go inside as long as you get permission from the shipyard's office.

2. Nigishima Town

Taking the local train to Kumano-shi, I visited a small remote fishing dock where the base of fishing union from Oshiōshi was based on.

3. Kumano Tourist Center

The surrounding of the Kumano-shi Station is not particularly shown within the anime officially, but I visited the anime's exhibition held at the local tourist center. The official information can be found within this page.

4. Onigajō Cliff

This is a natural park with beautiful cliff showing stunning view to the sea of Kumano. It was called as Onigajo (Demon's castle), because during Edo period, it was used as a hideout for local pirates.

5. Kumano Cultural Area Educational Center

This is a local cultural education center where seemingly one of Hamanaka's school was based on (the Junior Highschool on the land/Oshiōshi). To bad I can only took the photo from the bus.

6. Around Hadasu Town

Here we can found an abandoned school, known as the former Hadasu Primary School (JP: 旧波田須小学校, Kyū Hadasu Shōgakkō). This is the base of Shioshishio's former Junior Highschool where Hikari and friends went to before closing down. I was so lucky that I was able to enter the school, since there was a limited event when I visited.

Nearby the school, there was a cafe/homestay owned by a local artist. This cafe is called Tenyōza (天女座). The place has been dedicated for the anime fan is it was also depicted within the anime. They also served their speciality curry rice.

(I met Tenyōza's owner Shiho-san and she was so nice that she arranged so that his nice friend took me to Atashika Town, I highly recommended to visit and you can find the best view of Kumano Sea!!)

Within this town, you can also find the train station where it was also shown within the anime, Too bad I wasn't able to visit it, but I will put it here.

7. Around Atashika Town

This would be the final town I visited related to the anime. There were several spot that you can find in the anime based of this town, including the Shichi-seiya Store, where it was what the Sayamart was based on.

Atashika has a beautiful beach. We can also find several spots if we walk across the beach.

There was a local shrine which seemed to be what Uroko-sama's shrine in the anime. This shrine is called Tokuji Shrine.

Finally, I found another school by the name of former Atashika Junior Highschool. Although not official, I think this building was used as the inspiration for Hama JHS.
