Anime Travel 2 - Non Non Biyori in Real Life

Tires in former Shimosato school

Nyanpasu! If you are familiar with this greeting you should have watched or at least heard something about this series. The main charm of this anime revolves around how relaxing and slow-paced life can be at the countryside of Japan.

This time I would like to share some of the real life location that inspired settings for Non Non Biyori. Contrary to popular belief some of these locations are not that far away from Tokyo. They are located northern part of Tokyo including Ogawa-machi and Chichibu, Saitama and it took only 1 hour by train using Tobu Tojo line from Ikebukuro Tokyo.

Ogawamachi Station

Ogawamachi is well known for its Washi
(Japanese Traditional Paper Craft)

1. Former Shimosato Branch School

First the and the most iconic place would be the school where in the series, there were only 5 students each with different grade and the teacher whom got nothing to do than sleep throughout the day. I took a Tobu bus from Ogawamachi St. to Shimosato bus stop. From there, I needed to walk for like 15 minutes before reaching the school.

This place used to be a local elementary school, but it's more of spot for families to hangout now-days. There were also a cafe named "Cafe Mozart". I went during New Year holidays so caretaker wasn't there but the place was lively with many kids playing.

2. Village Roadside

This spot was at the different town from the school, but quite close to Ano Hana's location in Chichibu city Saitama so I took these pictures at the same day as when I explored spots for Ano Hana. They are located around Urayamaguchi St.

3. Candy Store/Dagashiya

Another iconic place of the anime would be the Candy Store (JP: 駄菓子屋、dagashiya). Luckily, this one is actually close from where my place when I was living in Tokyo which near Kosuge St., Katsushika-ku, Tokyo. Too bad I don't known when this store is already closed and don't have any idea when it actually opens. (This store is still opened way back in 2013 according to this blog)

There are still many spots for Non Non Biyori I haven't been to as they are located far-and-wide throughout the countryside of Japan. But I say is that I can really appreciate this anime's background illustrator and how they keep all the background looks so good and faithful to the original.
