 | The famous red staircase in real life |
|
There's no debate about the quality Makoto Shinkai gave us when he directed this masterpiece. To this date, Your Name should be his finest work and most people I guarantee will agree with my statement. Released in 2016, it has been ranked third as the highest Japanese-selling movie until now, with its beautiful art and heart-moving story. The art was so good it had a good resemblance with the real-life counterparts that I could not afford to miss when I was still in Japan.
For location no. 1-7, I will share the locations where Your Name was inspired outside of Tokyo, which is located in Hida, Gifu Pref. Suwa, Nagano Pref., and Nagoya City, Aichi Pref. These places were the inspiration for Mitsuha's home town Itomori.
For location no. 8 on wards are all locations that can be found around Tokyo area.

1. Hida-Furukawa Station
The first spot that I visited was the Hida-Furukawa station. This was the spot where Taki first arrived at the countryside as he was looking for the whereabouts of Itomori.

For the train to be located exactly like in the movie, we will need to be at the on-spot at 9:57 which is a piece of good information.

2. Ochiai Bus Stop
The second spot I visited was one station away from the Hida-Furukawa area, using the train to Tsunogawa. Here we can find that one scene where Taki and his friends sitting at a bus stop. This place was quite remote, but it was worthed because the scenery was stunning.

3. Hida City Library
The third spot that I visited was the Hida City Library. In the anime, Taki and friends were gathering information about Itomori in this library. For this area, I headed back from Tsunogawa to Hida-Furukawa area.
Note that you need permission to take pictures inside the library. You can ask the staff and they will be happy to assist you with issuing the permission (also always be polite!).

7. Lake Suwa / Tateishi Park
The next spot that I visited was the inspiration for the iconic Itomori Lake which is located in Suwa Lake, Nagano Pref. Directory of Your Name, Shinkai Makoto came from Nagano, and it seems that the Suwa area was his hometown which he adopted to appear in the movie.
To have a good view of the lake, I went to the high ground by the spot named Tateishi Park. It was quiet an effort to get there, but sure was worthed!

On my way to Tateishi Park, I found the electric transformer facility that seemed to be owned by the local electricity company Chubu Denki. In the anime, Taki (inside Mitsuha's body) blew this place to show the Itomori locals the incoming comet. (I hope nothing similar happened to this place in real life as it would be disastrous)
